Copywriting, like any other field, consists of niches. Some of them are easier, some are more difficult. If you are a beginner, then most likely you face a choice: start by writing simple text content for websites or master another, more complicated direction. Content for websites is much simpler, but the income here is not very large, and it takes a lot of time to produce necessary quantity. That’s why I would recommend spending a little more time learning and mastering one of the seven copywriting niches that we’re going to cover today. These are the most profitable areas that bring the main income to the modern copywriter.
Niches of copywriting that bring the main income
Before we begin, it is important to make one caveat. When mastering the niches listed below, you can go one of two ways.
- The first way is to become a narrow specialist in one area.
- The second way is to dive into everything at once to solve complex tasks or manage complex projects.
You choose the option that suits you best. For beginners, I would recommend master one niche first, and then study related areas. This will make it easier to search for clients and orders.
1. Commercial texts for websites
Important! This niche should not be confused with the content writing for websites. Read more about the key differences here.
The point here is to create wireframes of mockups of converter pages. These are the site pages that convince a person to perform the necessary commercial target action: an application, a purchase, a visit to a showroom, etc. They are also called landing pages.
There are more than a dozen options for target actions, but the essence is the same: a person reads the text and must do something. There are also texts with delayed conversion, when a person leaves and then returns after some time, up to a year. But this is a more subtle task. Such texts are always created on the basis of market analysis and strategy.
Here’s a short timelapse about landing page wireframe creation.
2. Business proposals
It is not always possible to attract an audience to the site. Then you have to use active sales and reach people directly. But people often do not have the time and desire to communicate. They ask for information to be sent to them by mail. And in such situations, the skills of creating commercial proposals are needed.
The formats here can be different: a regular document, a presentation, a video presentation, etc. It can even be cold commercial offers that are sent without the demand of a target audience (that people don’t expect). Among all copywriting niches, this is perhaps one of less competitive, but still very profitable.
3. Sales scripts
Sales scripts are not just a set of phrases about what and how to tell a client. This is a methodology for communicating with people, searching for interests and adjusting to them (for more information about such an adjustment to the audience – read here).
This niche can be used in a variety of areas: from everyday communication to finding a job and making deals. Plus, many elements of sales scripts (objection handlers) are used in commercial copy. It is also can be used to seek for new clients for the copywriters themselves. Very useful.
4. Email-marketing and SMM-copywriting
This is a complex direction, the main goal of which is to warm up the audience and build long-term relationships with it. As a rule, this is done with the help of a strategy and ready-made platforms and tools: email marketing services, social networks, Telegram. In accordance with the strategy, we create content that retains the current audience and attracts a new one, periodically making primary or repeat sales to it.
5. Content marketing
This is also one of the ways to warm up the audience and create passive income. It is preliminary done through blog posts and articles, but some copywriters do content marketing on social media or via email as well. Such an approach gives a complex and much stronger effect. However the site remains the key factor, because competent search engine optimization (SEO) gives a constant influx of new audience. For free. Copywriters or their clients earn money according to different models:
- PPC (pay per click)
- PPA (pay per action, commission)
- PPM (pay per millennium, direct advertising)
- regular ads placement, etc.
There will be a separate lesson on content marketing soon in the free course “Copywriting from zero in 30 days” on YouTube. Check it out.
6. Analytics and consulting
A copywriter doesn’t always need to write something. Sometimes it’s enough just to be able to analyze the current situation (using special tools, such as web analytics systems), find bottlenecks and be the bearer of the necessary knowledge to share it with clients. Sometimes even small changes on the site or in the text can radically affect the result. Therefore, such knowledge is expensive. In the same paragraph you can include copywriting training.
7. Advertisements copy
It is very good when there is a cool text on the site page. But it’s bad when the audience can’t find it. In order for people to start reading the text, they must visit it, for example, through advertisements.
Good ads bring in more readers and more sales. Some ads (for example, for advertising boards like eBay) allow you to make sales even without a website at all. This niche in combination with commercial texts and scripts allow the copywriter to create a full-fledged commercial system and bring more money to the business.
Copywriting niches popularity
All the niches covered above are now in demand. Some more (texts for social networks or content marketing), some less (commercial offers). The popularity of a particular area, as a rule, is determined by demand. But it is important to understand that as demand grows, so does competition.
Rarer niches, such as commercial offers or sales scripts, have lower demand in general and are more difficult in production. But at the same time, competition in them is much lower. As a result, copywriters who specialize in them can receive the most expensive orders and earn no less, and sometimes even more money, compared to other areas.
In addition, many directions can be combined, thereby creating additional value and further increasing income. We talk about it and many other things in this free course.
Take care of yourself and see you in the next post.
Best regards, Dan.
